  • Physical activity and sedentary behavior was measured for 14 days on 2649 participants using worn accelerometers

  • Sleep was measured both objectively (with an accelerometer) and subjectively (through a questionnaire)

  • The study found that individuals that were more physically active or less sedentary had higher sleep efficiency even if they did not sleep longer

  • 29 of the 34 studies included in the review found that exercise had a positive impact on sleep quality or duration

  • The varied results of the studies was attributed to the difference between age, health status and exercise intensity of the participants.

  • It was concluded that there is substantial evidence to suggest that exercise intervention is effective for those getting inadequate sleep.

Why it Matters

According to the National Sleep Foundation inadequate sleep can lead to conditions like weight gain and obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and stroke, depression, and increased risk of death.  It can also cause impaired immune function, impaired performance, mood disorders and trouble concentrating.  

Exercise has many benefits towards health, perceived energy levels, mood and now sleep!
